Permaculture for Cold Temperate Gardens

If you would like to participate in this course please bring cash or a cheque to the course location, Jasper High School Home Economics Room. Be sure to bring a pen and paper to take notes and dress appropriately for the weather as you will be venturing outside to study some gardens in the community.

Permaculture is a design system for maximizing food production. In this introductory Permaculture course, you will learn how to make a basic design for your garden. You will also learn how to combine elements of your garden for maximum food production. Easy step by step methods of collecting water, creating healthy soil, and controlling pests and weeds will enable you to be less reliant on outside sources of input.
Permaculture emulates nature in its resilience. It teaches us how plants, animals and insects interact to create greater diversity and production in the
garden. This course will focus on specific techniques for organic growing, extending seasons, and harvest and storage for cold climates.

For people who have some very basic English skills, but need to improve in all areas for better communication. Grammar, vocabulary, reading and speaking are key areas that will be covered in class. Improvement in these areas will help with confidence when communicating in an English speaking setting.

This program is designed for foreign workers who need to improve their English language skills and who are new to Jasper and Alberta. There will be focus on orienting newcomers to the community, establishing connections to reduce isolation, and, with support, lay the groundwork for participation in all aspects of community life.

It would seem that depression in children and youth is on the rise. The reality is, if gone untreated, our young people are affected by a loss of educational opportunities, loss of social opportunities and the loss of time. This evening is
dedicated to exploring depression, what it looks like, what you watch for and what help is available.

Cycle Maintenance Course for Women

Do you know how to look after your chain? Fix a puncture? Tweak your gears? You’ll get much more mileage out of your bike if you learn to look after it,plus you’ll never be caught out in an emergency. This course will cover the basic essentials for dealing with common roadside repairs so you can
get back on your bike and home safely. Includes: wheel removal and installation; puncture repair; gear tuning, and basic brake adjustment. This class is essentially road-and trail-side “bicycle first aid”.

In this three day session you will learn the skills required to react quickly, precisely and safely to help yourself and others in a distressful situation on or around the water.
Learn proper use of equipment, assessing river dynamics and hazards, and making relevant decisions regarding your group size, roles and capabilities. You will learn both in classroom sessions as well as practical sessions. This swiftwater rescue training course not only meets the standards of the Professional River Outfitters Association of Alberta it is recognised around the world through the International Rescue Instructors Authority (IRIA). This is a certification course for (SFR-O) through Rescue Canada and the (IRIA).
