Council members
Members of the Jasper Adult Learning Council are a group of community members at large who volunteer their time, ideas and skills to provide Jasper's adults with non-credit learning opportunities. Our council members provide input and help to determine the programs and services offered by the Jasper Adult Learning Council. The board itself is also the local representative to the provincial government for the funding that is provided to Jasper. Our council members can positively affect our community with their minimal time commitment.

Tutors
If you can read this,
help someone who can't.
Tutors play an important role in our Literacy Program. Using their own skills and knowledge, tutors provide students with encouragement, support and instruction.
Programs include English Language Learning (ELL) and Literacy Skills upgrading for those with English as their first language.
Professional development and training opportunities are available for our tutors.
Tutors are asked to give a minimum of 2 hours per week to their commitment with their student.
Our tutors are at the heart of our Literacy Programs. Share your gifts. Open doors of opportunity for others and yourself.
Share the gift of literacy with someone still perfecting his or her literacy or English language skills. Gain tools for teaching and ideas for students. Tutors learn a variety of learning strategies and tools to facilitate the learning process. This twelve-hour program will provide tutors with skills to assist others - great practice for teaching oversees.
Who qualifies for a Tutor?
-Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
-Must be 18 years or older

Jasper Booster—Captain
Volunteer is on the loose again.
Volunteers in the community may expect a visit from the gift-bearing
captain throughout Volunteer Week from Apr. 27- May 3. Youth volunteers,
from Grade 7 to Grade 12, will be recognized through the Leaders
of Tomorrow Award program. Winners will be elected by their peers.
To be eligible, youths must actively participate in the community,
give freely of their time and make a difference in the community
through volunteering. The deadline for nominations is Apr. 24.
Any organizations wanting their volunteer visited by Captain Volunteer
can contact the Community Learning Centre at 852-4418. Volunteers
make many things in Jasper possible; adding quality of life, pleasure,
and comfort, and creating cooperation among the community’s
residents. In short, volunteers make magic. Volunteer Week is their
time to be recognized and appreciated.
The following is a glimpse of what volunteers mean to Jasper, in
the words of representatives from the organizations that depend
on them to be successful.
When you read these comments it’s easy to see just how important
volunteers are and how much the community would lose without their
hard work.
Greg Van Tighem, Fire Chief,
Jasper Volunteer Fire Brigade
“Volunteers are the fire brigade. Everything about the fire department
is operated by volunteers. Without volunteers there would be no
fire brigade. The benefit to the community with fire volunteers
is that they don’t just fight fires, but contribute to the community
in many other ways.”
Joan Connors
Area Team Leader,Seton General Hospital
“Volunteers fundraise for us to buy equipment and offer a music
program for long-term residents. I don’t know what we’d do without
the volunteers. They put quality into the life of residents in
long-term care. They make our lives and the lives of our residents
so much easier. Our crisis team is strictly volunteer. We’re probably
the only community with that service. It frees the nurses and doctors
to do clinical work.”
Glen Charron, Manager,
Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives
“Volunteers created the museum and continue to run it and improve
it. Volunteers work at various projects from the being on the board,
to helping in archives and hauling books for book sales. Without
volunteers, the museum would not exist. It has had support from
governments and businesses, but it is a volunteer organization.”
Dave Nielson,
Past President, Jasper Lions Club
“Without volunteers, there would be no Lions Club. Without the
Lions Club, there would be no seniors’ manor. We also have the
playground program, which means making upgrades to the existing
playground. The Lions Club also helps individuals under special
circumstances and our members have quietly helped numerous individuals
in their time of need.”
Brent Chorneyko
Volunteer, Jasper Minor Sports
“Without volunteers we wouldn’t have a minor sports association.
It’s entirely volunteer driven. Minor sports gives kids something
constructive to do year round while teaching them life skills.
Because sports are team sports, they have to learn discipline,
respect and team work.”
